About The Energy Engineers

Engineering is in our DNA.

The best energy decisions begin with understanding: the engineering, the commercial challenges and the business behind them. At The Energy Engineers Ltd, that belief connects our family heritage with the work we do for UK organisations today.

Our heritage

Two generations. One engineering philosophy.

Our story begins with a practical conviction: understand how energy works before deciding what to change. It is the thread running from Robert Smith’s engineering background to the wider energy consultancy we are building today.

The foundations · 2018

Robert Smith

A family heritage built on engineering.

The Energy Engineers Ltd was founded in 2018 by Robert Smith, following his return to the United Kingdom from Ireland. A commercial mechanical and electrical engineer, Robert specialised in behind-the-meter power generation assets and Low Voltage (LV) and High Voltage (HV) electrical infrastructure.

His experience centred on how energy is generated, distributed and integrated within commercial and industrial environments. Before recommending a technology or investment, his starting point was to understand the engineering. That principle became the foundation of the business.

Continuing the family legacy

Craig Smith

Engineering knowledge. A wider energy perspective.

Today, that heritage continues through Robert’s son, Craig Smith, a Chartered Energy Engineer and Head of Energy Services. Craig has helped develop the business into an independent, engineering-led energy consultancy, combining practical technical knowledge with commercial energy intelligence.

Building on his father’s work in generation and electrical infrastructure, Craig’s focus extends across procurement, utility management, optimisation and long-term energy strategy. Two generations bring a consistent approach: understand the business, examine the engineering and establish a sound commercial case.

What makes us different

Engineering Before Technology™

Energy decisions reach beyond a supply contract or a piece of equipment. They affect how a site operates, what it costs to run and how well it can adapt. We look at how energy is purchased, generated, distributed, consumed and managed across the organisation.

We investigate inefficiencies, challenge unnecessary expenditure and assess infrastructure constraints before recommending solutions. That might mean reviewing an electrical network, questioning capacity charges, comparing solar PV, wind or combined heat and power (CHP), assessing battery storage, or developing a procurement strategy. Generation decisions consider electricity and useful heat demand, local resources and the practical needs of the operation.

  1. Understand the engineering.

Start with the operation, existing assets, energy demand and future plans.

  2. Establish the opportunity.

Examine technical options, costs and assumptions on a consistent basis.

  3. Deliver the right solution.

Recommend a practical route with clear responsibilities and a commercial rationale.

Our expertise

Complete energy intelligence. One engineering partner.

Our services connect the technical, financial and operational sides of energy. We bring the relevant disciplines together around the needs of the individual site or estate.

Energy procurement & commercial strategy

Independent procurement support, contract analysis, market intelligence, risk management and purchasing strategies to help businesses understand their commitments and make informed commercial decisions.

Mechanical & electrical engineering

Technical assessments, infrastructure reviews, LV and HV engineering considerations and electrical capacity optimisation, with practical recommendations grounded in the condition and requirements of existing assets.

Onsite generation & energy storage

Assessment of solar PV, wind, combined heat and power (CHP) and other relevant generation options, alongside battery storage and integration with existing assets. We examine electricity and useful heat demand, resource availability, planning, grid connection, operating responsibilities, whole-life costs and carbon performance to establish a practical fit for the site.

Funded energy solutions

Explore specialist funding arrangements and Power Purchase Agreements for energy infrastructure. Suitability, upfront capital requirements, ownership and ongoing obligations depend on the assessment and agreed terms.

Utility management & bureau services

Portfolio-wide utility management, invoice validation, billing investigations, consumption analysis and supplier liaison, including investigation of potential historic overcharging and the evidence needed to challenge it.

Energy intelligence & infrastructure optimisation

Metering, monitoring, consumption analysis, network charging reviews and capacity optimisation to identify avoidable expenditure and opportunities to make better use of the infrastructure already in place.

Energy transition & decarbonisation

Practical engineering-led strategies that connect energy efficiency and carbon reduction with operational resilience and long-term commercial objectives, reflecting the organisation’s priorities and constraints.

Strategic partnerships

Independent thinking. Specialist delivery.

A sound proposal needs the right people to carry it through. Our strategic partnerships with companies such as MJ Quinn and SNRG connect our engineering and commercial consultancy with specialist delivery capabilities.

Depending on the project and agreed scope, that support can extend from technical assessment and financial feasibility to design, funding, installation and ongoing operational support. The aim is a coordinated approach, with clear responsibilities at each stage.

Our role remains to recommend the right solution for the business, supported by sound engineering and a clear commercial rationale. Funding and delivery arrangements are assessed and agreed for each project.

Our values

The principles behind our business.

A word from Craig

The values we grew up with.

Engineering has always been more than just a profession in our family.

My father's background in mechanical and electrical engineering, particularly his work with onsite power generation and electrical infrastructure, helped shape my own understanding of the industry.

Growing up with that engineering influence instilled in me the importance of understanding how things work, questioning assumptions and doing a job properly.

Our future

Founded on engineering. Built on trust. Driven by innovation.

Our ambition is to build one of the UK’s most respected independent, engineering-led energy consultancies through the quality of our work, the strength of our relationships and the value we create for clients.

As businesses plan for energy security, changing infrastructure needs and decarbonisation, we will keep connecting practical engineering with commercial understanding. We are proud of the foundations Robert established and ambitious about what comes next. Technologies and markets will change; our engineering-first philosophy remains.
